Primeval forests of the Veluwe
Primeval forests on the Veluwe are much older than thought. Primeval forests have existed on the Veluwe for longer than was thought. After people tried to create primeval forest themselves in the 1990s, they eventually discovered that it was already there! Estimates of the age of the forests range from 700 to 1000 years. Researchers even speak of 1500 years, while the press speaks of forests that are no less than 4000 years old.
The origin of the forest is due more to the root systems than to the trees. These systems are much older than the trees, some of which have already rotted away. This is what makes the forest so special. With all the stumps and mosses that can be found on them, it is also very beautiful to see. The many stumps provide food for the larvae of the stag beetle, which occurs in most primeval forests. According to the University of Wageningen, one cannot dig into the roots to find out the age of the trees. Tests with the DNA of these trees should provide more clarity.
